German Doctor Says Tymoshenko's Condition Better

More than 100 people gathered in a tent camp in Kyiv on May 30 to mark 300 days since the jailing of opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko.

A German doctor says jailed former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko's health condition has improved somewhat but that her treatment at a hospital in her homeland remains difficult.

Karl Max Einhaeupl has examined Tymoshenko in Ukraine's eastern city of Kharkiv.

Other doctors from Berlin's Charite hospital have been overseeing her treatment there.

Einhaeupl said that Tymoshenko, who suffers from a chronic back condition, is now "more mobile."

He told reporters that "the pain is a little bit less...but it's not gone at all."

He says the treatment remains difficult because Tymoshenko distrusts Ukrainian personnel and the German doctors are never alone with her.

Tymoshenko is serving a seven-year jail term on charges of abuse of office, condemned as politically motivated by the West and by defenders.
