The leaders of Germany and Britain have agreed on the need for "severe" international sanctions to be imposed as quickly as possible on the Libyan regime.
The office of German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that she and British Prime Minister David Cameron believe "the United Nations Security Council must adopt severe sanctions as quickly as possible."
The UN Security Council is set to meet again today to consider a sanctions resolution against Libyan ruler Muammar Qaddafi in an effort to make him halt a violent crackdown on opposition protesters.
Britain, France, Germany, and the United States have drawn up a resolution which says the regime's attacks on civilians could amount to crimes against humanity.
Meanwhile, Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said today it appears Qaddafi "no longer controls the situation in Libya."
Hundreds if not thousands are believed to have been killed in Libya in recent days in clashes between forces loyal to Qaddafi and antigovernment protesters.
