Greece Supports Review Of EU Sanctions Against Russia

Greece says it supports a review of European Union economic sanctions against Russia over its involvement in the conflict in eastern Ukraine.

After talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Moscow on February 11, Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias said that "discontent is growing against over [the] sanctions against Russia" and that a "group of countries" want to look at "reviewing or relaxing [the] sanctions."

Kotzias did not say which EU countries are part of such a group, but added that Brussels needs to look for "other solutions."

He said Greece could also serve as a mediator between Moscow and Brussels.

Lavrov, for his part, said Moscow would consider providing financial aid to Greece if Athens made such a request.

Greece is in a showdown with the EU over a renegotiation of the terms of its bailout and says it could seek money from Russia, China, or the United States if an agreement with the EU is not reached.
