Gunmen Kill Anti-Al-Qaeda Militiaman, His Family In Baghdad

Gunmen have killed an anti-Al-Qaeda militiaman and his family in an attack on their home in Baghdad.

Police said on September 3 that the man, who has not been identified, was killed along with his wife and three children.

The attack comes just hours after a prominent leader of a Sunni tribal militia opposed to Al-Qaeda escaped an assassination attempt in Baghdad on September 1.

In that attempt, two suicide bombers blew themselves up near Wisam al-Hardan's home in Baghdad's western Harthiyah neighborhood, killing five bodyguards and wounding four others.

Hardan was not hurt.

He was recently appointed by Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki to lead the Sahwa, a collection of Sunni tribal militias fighting Al-Qaeda members and other militants.
