More Heavy Fighting Reported In Eastern Ukraine

More heavy fighting between Ukrainian forces and pro-Russian rebels has been reported in eastern Ukraine.

A Ukrainian military spokesman said on August 14 that one soldier had been killed and six wounded in fresh fighting over the past 24 hours.

Separatist leader Eduard Basurin said a civilian had been killed in shelling overnight on rebel-controlled Horlivka, a town 25 kilometers northeast of the rebel-held city of Donetsk.

On August 13, the Ukrainian military reported what it called the heaviest exchanges of tank and rocket fire since the signing of a cease-fire agreement in Minsk in February.

Reports say recent fighting has focused on control of a strategic highway linking the government-held southeastern port of Mariupol with Donetsk, which sits to the north.

Most of the road is currently controlled by pro-Kyiv units.
