Human Rights Watch: Ex-Libya Official Dies After Torture

Human Rights Watch (HRW) says a Libyan diplomat who served under slain ruler Muammar Qaddafi appears to have died under torture after his arrest by an anti-Qaddafi militia.

The U.S.-based group says Omar Brebesh, 62, who had served as Qaddafi’s ambassador to France, died less than 24 hours after his arrest in Tripoli on January 19.

It says he had been detained by a militia from the western Libyan town of Zintan.

The rights group says it “read a report by the judicial police in Tripoli, which said that Brebesh had died from torture and that an unnamed suspect had confessed to killing him.”

The death is the latest in a series of reported abuses by the former rebels who overthrew Qaddafi last year.
