Gaza: Palestinians Throw Shoes At Convoy Carrying UN Chief

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

Palestinian protesters have thrown shoes and other objects at the convoy of United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

The assault occurred as Ban entered the Gaza Strip for a visit with Palestinians.

Throwing shoes at a person is considered a major sign of disrespect in Islamic culture.

The protesters were angry at what they regard as a failure by world leaders to act on behalf of their relatives and other Palestinains jailed in Israel.

Some 4,000 of what Israel describes as Palestinian "security prisoners" are held in Israel.

Ban’s visit comes a day after the UN chief urged Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to ease restrictions on Gaza, which is subject to an Israeli blockade.
