IRKUTSK, Russia -- Russian officials say they have launched an investigation into an oil spill in southeastern Siberia caused by illegal tapping of an oil pipeline belonging to the Russian Federal State Reserves Agency.
Drinking water supplies were cut off for tens of thousands of residents in Irkutsk region after it emerged on April 25 that about 2 tons of oil products had been spilled in the Angara River.
Employees from the Emergency Situations Ministry are currently working to clean up the site.
Officials said the drinking-water supply systems were expected to resume working later on April 26.
