Pro-Reform Journalists Arrested In Iran

Two pro-reform journalists have been arrested in Iran.

The journalists for the “Maghreb” newspaper were reported detained on March 6.

ISNA, the Iranian Students' News Agency, said managing director Mohammad Mehdi Emami Nasseri and political editor Alireza Aghaeirad were detained by agents from the Tehran prosecutor's office.

The report said the arrests were in connection with an article seen by investigators as critical of President Mahmud Ahmadinejad.

The Fars news agency linked the detentions to the daily’s publication of a letter from moderate former President Mohammad Khatami, who preceded Ahmadinejad.

Iranian authorities arrested more than 10 journalists in January over links to foreign-based media denounced by the regime as “antirevolutionary.”

The moves targeting media come amid preparations for Iran’s June presidential election.
