Iran’s Foreign Minister says jailed Washington Post reporter Jason Rezaian faces serious charges in Tehran, but he is seeking to resolve the case from a “humanitarian perspective.”
Speaking during a security conference in Tehran, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said the “issue over this defendant is judicial process but we are making efforts to resolve it."
Rezaian, who has been jailed for more than a year on charges of espionage, was recently convicted by a Revolutionary Court in Tehran.
Iranian officials have not provided details on the verdict or sentence.
Iranian judiciary spokesman Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejeie said on October 11 that Rezaian, a 39-year-old dual Iranian-U.S. citizen, had been convicted.
But he said he did not have the details of the verdict.
Iran’s state media cited the indictment as saying Rezaian was charged with collecting information about Iranian and foreign individuals and companies that have been circumventing international sanctions and passing the information on to the U.S. government.
Iranian state TV has repeatedly called Rezaian an “American spy.”
