A senior commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard has said “Israel will certainly pay” for an airstrike it carried out in Syria that killed an Iranian general along with six Lebanese Hizballah fighters.
Guard commander Nasser Soltani, made the remarks during a funeral ceremony for General Mohammad Ali Allahdadi in Tehran on January 21.
The ceremony was attended by thousands.
Iranian officials say Allahdadi was killed January 18 on the Syrian side of the Golan Heights while performing an “advisory mission” to help Syrian government forces fight Islamic State militants.
The strike also killed Jihad Mughniyeh, the son of an assassinated Hizballah commander, and Mohammed Issa, a fighter responsible for Hizballah’s operations in Syria and Iraq.
The commander of the Revolutionary Guards, General Mohammad Ali Jafari, warned on January 20 that Israel should expect “devastating thunderbolts” in response to the air strike.
Iran supports the Syrian regime and the Lebanese Hizballah through military and financial help.
