Iranian Official Denies Rohani's Tweet On Rosh Hashanah

Iranian President Hassan Rohani

A senior Iranian official has denied that President Hassan Rohani tweeted a message congratulating Jews on their new year.

Iran's Fars news agency quoted Mohammad Reza Sadeq as saying Rohani does not have a Twitter account.

An account purportedly belonging to Rohani had a message posted late on September 4 that wished all Jews, "particularly Iranian Jews," a happy Rosh Hashanah.

Many Iranian officials -- including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei -- have a presence on sites like Facebook and Twitter, albeit without claims of personal participation.

The accounts are believed to be maintained by supporters.

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Javad Zarif, who is the only Iranian official to acknowledge his presence on social media, tweeted a message on September 5 that said simply, "Happy Rosh Hashanah."
