Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's top international affairs adviser has arrived in Moscow for meetings with senior Russian officials and to take part in a political conference.

Ali Akbar Velayati will reportedly discuss global issues, regional cooperation, and security issues during his four-day visit, Iranian media said.

He said his visit is on the invitation of the Russian Institute of Strategic Studies.

Velayati said before leaving Tehran that Iran and Russia "could play a very constructive role in the establishment of peace and the creation of conditions necessary for developing international interactions."

Velayati described Iran and Russia as "two influential states of the world and the region."

He said his visit to Russia was part "of the fulfillment of the strategic vectors" defined by Khamenei.

Velayati visited Moscow in January 2015 as a special envoy for Iranian President Hassan Rohani.
