Iranian lawmakers have urged President Hassan Rohani to enforce the Islamic dress code that requires women to cover their hair and body with loose clothing in public.
State media reported that 195 lawmakers sent a letter to Rohani on June 15, calling him to take measures against Western cultural influences, which – according to the lawmakers -- target Islamic values.
"One of the main areas of cultural invasion is in trying to change the way of life of Iranians regarding the veil," the lawmakers wrote.
The letter warned if the government doesn't heed the law regarding the Islamic dress code, Iranian society will face serious cultural challenges.
The Islamic dress code has enforced in Iran since the 1979 Islamic revolution.
However, it has become increasingly relaxed since Rohani came to power in June 2013, pledging social freedoms.
