Iranian Environmentalists Clash With Police

Demonstrators have clashed with security forces in western Iran during a protest to demand greater care for one of the world's biggest saltwater lakes.

AP says the protest took place in Orumieh (Urmia) on August 27.

The agency said demonstrators threw rocks at police who answered back with gunfire.

It was unclear whether police used live bullets. The AP report offered no further details.

Orumieh is on the shores of a lake of the same name about 600 kilometers northwest of the capital, Tehran.

Environmentalists and activists have warned for years that the lake is threatened by drought and aggressive agriculture policies.
