Reports from Iraq say at least 11 people have been killed and more than 20 others wounded in a gun and bombing attack southeast of the capital, Baghdad.
An Interior Ministry spokesman said on November 27 that two attackers shot several civilians in Nahrawan district, located 35 kilometers east of the Iraqi capital, before one blew himself up and the other was killed by security forces.
However, a police captain was quoted as saying that a total of five attackers launched the assault in a market in the Nahrawan area. Three of them were killed by security forces but the other two blew themselves up, the police officer said.
The extremist group Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for the attack, with its Amaq news agency saying it targeted the Iran-backed Shi'ite militias known as the Popular Mobilization Forces.
The IS group seized large swaths of territory in Iraq and neighboring Syria in summer 2014, but it has since suffered a string of military defeats in both countries.
Last week, it lost control of the last town it had held in Iraq.
