A spate of car bombings has left at least 31 people dead in the Iraqi capital.

Officials said more than 90 other people were wounded in the attacks, which targeted markets and shopping streets in different parts of Baghdad.

The bombings come as violence continues to surge in Iraq amid escalating political and sectarian tensions.

Iraqi government figures published recently revealed the July death toll from violence reached almost 1,000, the highest monthly figure since April 2008.
