Gunfire Reported Along Iraq-Kuwait Border

Kuwaiti media are reporting that shooting broke out along the country’s border with Iraq.

The Kuwaiti news website Al-Aan reported on March 11 that a group of Iraqis started throwing stones and eventually fired at Kuwaitis who were doing maintenance work on border posts.

Iraqi police deny anyone fired toward Kuwait and said Iraqi police had fired into the air to disperse Iraqi demonstrators who were trying to remove some of the border markers.

The Kuwaiti state news agency KUNA reported the Iraqis were attempting to “sabotage” part of the border fence but did not mention any shooting.

The border in the area near Umm Qasr where the shooting took place is based on a 1993 UN Security Council demarcation and remains disputed between the two countries.
