The U.S. Marine Corps has launched an investigation after photographs were posted on a website that purportedly showed Marines burning corpses in Fallujah.
The 41 photos posted by TMZ.com showed what the website claimed were U.S. Marines in Fallujah in 2004 burning corpses of insurgents and posing with dead bodies.
Marine Corps spokesman Colonel Neil Murphy said on January 15 that the Marine Corps was trying to verify the authenticity of the photos and determine the identities of the Marines shown in the pictures.
The Pentagon said the images did not appear to show war crimes but the soldiers might have violated military rules prohibiting the mishandling of remains or inappropriate photos on the battlefield.
TMZ said it had handed the photographs over to the U.S. Defense Department.
