Iraq Foreign Minister: Arab League Won't Ask Assad to Resign

Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari

Iraq's foreign minister says the Arab League will not ask Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to resign at a summit in Baghdad this week.

Hoshyar Zebari said on March 26 that Arab leaders will agree on a "doable" solution to end the ongoing conflict in Syria, where yearlong protests and clashes have claimed thousands of lives.

Zebari said the League would maintain support for peaceful regime change, but that Syrian people ultimately must lead that process.

Zebari said Syria, which has not been invited to the three-day summit, will be high on agenda at the meeting.
