Israel says it carried out a joint missile test with the United States in the Mediterranean on September 3, after Russia said its early-warning system had detected the launch of two "objects" over the sea.

The Israeli Defense Ministry said it tested a missile used as a target in its missile-defense system. The test was carried out around the same time the Russian Defense Ministry said its radar system in Armavir, southern Russia, detected the launches. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu reported the event to President Vladimir Putin.

The Israeli Defense Ministry initially said it was unaware of any launches.

A Syrian security source said no missiles landed on Syrian territory, while Russian media reports later said it appeared the "objects" fell into the sea.

The reports came as U.S. warships are deployed in the Mediterranean in preparation for a possible strike against Syria.
