Former Israeli President Shimon Peres was in serious but stable condition after suffering a major stroke.
The Sheba Medical Center near Tel Aviv, where he is being treated, said the 93-year-old Peres was "in a critical condition but stable."
The head of the medical center said Peres was in a medically induced coma to allow him to rest after experiencing significant bleeding in the brain.
The veteran politician twice served as prime minister and was president from 2007 to 2014.
He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994 for his role in negotiating the Oslo peace accords. He shared the prize with Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, who was later assassinated, and the late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.
Despite his advanced years, Peres has been active in public, mostly through his NGO, the Peres Center for Peace, which promotes closer ties between Israel and the Palestinians.
