Rabbi Moshe Greenberg, a religious educator who survived a brutal gulag in Siberia and secretly taught Judaism under an oppressive Soviet regime, has died in Israel at the age of 84.
The Hasidic Chabad Lubavitch movement, of which Greenberg was a member, says he died on June 18 in Israel.
Greenberg was reportedly born in Moldova.
At the age of 14, he traveled to Uzbekistan to study Judaism at a secret seminary at a time when the Soviets prohibited its teaching.
Greenberg was caught trying to escape the Soviet Union at the end of World War II and was sent to a forced-labor camp in Siberia for seven years.
He kept and taught Jewish traditions in the gulag, despite the danger of harsh punishment.
Greenberg moved to Israel in 1967.
