The Swedish Supreme Court has confirmed an arrest warrant for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange for questioning on allegations of rape.

The court today refused to hear an appeal by Assange, who denies the allegations.

He says they are part of a smear campaign following the release by WikiLeaks of secret documents on military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan and of secret U.S. diplomatic cables.

Interpol has put Assange on its wanted list.

The whereabouts of the 39-year-old Australian are not known.

But Britain's "Independent" newspaper and Assange's London-based lawyer today said that British police know where he is. His lawyer said security services from a "number of countries" also know Assange's whereabouts.

British police would not confirm the reports.
