Militant Killed In Kabardino-Balkaria

Russian authorities say one militant has been killed in the republic of Kabardino-Balkaria.

The local investigative committee said the militant died in a police operation in the Elbrus district.

No police officer was reported killed or injured in the operation.

On December 13, a three-day special operation against suspected terrorists in the same district ended with the killing of four militants and one police officer.

Last week, a popular television broadcaster was gunned down in Kabardino-Balkaria's capital, Nalchik.

Violence between Islamic militants and police in the troubled North Caucasus region leaves scores of people dead and injured each year.

The region's violence-plagued republics include Kabardino-Balkaria, Daghestan, Ingushetia, and Chechnya.
