Bus Falls Into Gorge In Kashmir, Killing At Least 23

Police say a crowded bus veered off a rocky village road and fell into a deep gorge on May 11, killing at least 23 people in the Indian-controlled section of the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir.

Police Inspector-General Danish Rana said the driver apparently lost control of the bus while negotiating a curve.

Rana said at least 25 other people were injured in the accident.

Rana said police had reached the area and were evacuating the injured.

The bus was traveling to the town of Uthampur when the accident happened near the village of Marotthi, more than 200 kilometers south of Indian-controlled Kashmir's main city of Srinagar.

Kashmir is divided between India and Pakistan, but claimed by both in its entirety.
