Former Kazakh Agriculture Deputy Pleads Not Guilty In Corruption Trial

Kazakhstan is trying a former deputy agriculture minister, Muslim Omiraev, on corruption charges.

Omiraev was arrested in December and charged with accepting a $100 thousand bribe from a businessman.

He pleaded not guilty on the first day of the trial in Astana on September 2.

In parliament on the same day, President Nursultan Nazarbaev urged lawmakers to come up with a new strategy to tackle corruption among officials.

Several former officials have been faced prosecution on suspicion of graft in the past two years.

Some of them have been sentenced to long prison terms.

In July, the chief of Kazakhstan’s state agency on the regulation of monopolies, Murat Ospanov, was arrested on suspicion of accepting a $200,000 bribe.
