A Kazakh judge has been jailed for releasing a Russian businessman who had been convicted of ordering a murder.
The Almaly district court in Kazakhstan's largest city, Almaty, found Kuplash Otemisova guilty on May 5 of "making a wrong court ruling that led to an aggravated situation" and sentenced her to 4 1/2 years in jail.
Otemisova, 56, was arrested in September 2013 after she ruled in August that a 12-year sentence imposed on Aleksandr Sutyaginsky in March 2013 should be replaced by a suspended six-year sentence, since the killing he ordered never took place.
He was released and went to Russia. His whereabouts is unknown.
Sutyaginsky, a businessman from the Siberian city of Omsk, was active in Kazakhstan and often seen at events with top Kazakh and Russian officials, including Russian and Kazakh Presidents Vladimir Putin and Nursultan Nazarbaev, respectively.
