Hundreds of Kazakh activists held a rally in Almaty on March 24 to mark the 100th day since riots in Zhanaozen, in western Kazakhstan.
Fifteen people were killed and more than 100 injured in the riots and subsequent police crackdown in Zhanaozen and the village of Shetpe on December 16-17, 2011.
At the rally a minute's silence was held for the victims of the unrest. Attendees and speakers called for a full and fair investigation into the Zhanaozen events and that the perpetrators be punished.
Ramazan Yesergepov, the head of the Zhanaozen-2011 committee and director of the Journalists in Trouble foundation, called on the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the United Nations, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and the U.S. Department of State to "express an unambiguous and principled judgment about the events in Zhanaozen."
