Dozens of protesters were detained in the Kazakh capital, Nur-Sultan, during protests demanding the release of all political prisoners and a boycott of the upcoming presidential election. The June 9 vote follows the resignation of authoritarian President Nursultan Nazarbaev, who had led the country since the Soviet era. Other protests were held on May 1 in Almaty, Qaraghandy, and other cities.
