The mandate of the European Union Rule of Law Mission in Kosovo (EULEX) officially expires on June 14.
Kosovo's government says it amended a draft law to prolong the mission for two years at a session on June 13.
The decision now needs to be approved by parliament.
"We are continuing to work with the Kosovo authorities in order to complete all preparations for the renewal of the EULEX mandate," said a spokeswoman for the EU mission to Kosovo, Dinka Zivalj.
EULEX, created in 2008, aims to help Kosovo develop its justice system and deals with sensitive cases of organized crime, corruption, and war crimes.
The EU mission took over from the United Nations, which has administered Kosovo since a NATO bombing campaign in 1999 drove out Serbian forces.
