Kosovo Foreign Minister Visits Serbia

Kosovar Foreign Minister Enver Hoxhaj has traveled to Serbia to attend a regional conference, the first such visit since Kosovo unilaterally seceded from Serbia in 2008.

Speaking to reporters in Belgrade on October 23, Hoxhaj declared himself a "symbol of Kosovo sovereignty."

"Kosovo is independent. No one can stop the flow of history," he added.

Hoxhaj was in Belgrade to participate in a European Union-sponsored gathering of Western Balkans government ministers.

Serbia refuses to recognize Kosovo's independence but Belgrade agreed to improve ties with its former southern province to further its goal of joining the European Union.

Hoxhaj's trip comes a day after the International Olympic Committee granted Kosovo provisional recognition, paving the way for Serbia's former province to take part in the 2016 Games in Rio.

Serbia's Olympic Committee said it lodged a formal protest.
