Kosovo Plays First International Soccer Game

Kosovo played its first international soccer game on March 5.

Before a sellout crowd of 18,000 in Mitrovica, Kosovo played Haiti to a 0-0 draw.

In January, the world soccer governing body FIFA cleared its member countries to organize national and club matches against the former Yugoslav province.

The move came despite Serbia objecting to Kosovo having a national team because it considers the territory as its own.

However, FIFA ordered the match in Mitrovica to be played with certain restrictions, including no playing of Kosovo's national anthem, as well as no flag or state markings on its jerseys.

Nearly the entire Kosovar team plays abroad and comprises only players from the ethnic Albanian majority.
