Large Fire Destroys Shops At Tajik Bazaar

A large fire in Tajikistan's southern city of Kulob has destroyed 46 shops and kiosks at a local bazaar and damaged dozens of others.

Kulob mayoral spokesman Suhrobsho Farruhsho told RFE/RL on July 22 that the fire at the Sahovat market overnight also did damage to another 70 shops and a cafeteria.

He said some 480 square meters of the bazaar were damaged overall.

There were no casualties.

A special local government commission is investigating.

Another fire at the same market in January destroyed 96 shops and 382 selling points. The cause of that fire was not disclosed.

In 2009, the Sahovat market was also hit by a fire whose cause was unclear.
