The Birinchi Mai district court said on February 9 that it had ruled on the detention of Anvar Sartaev eight days earlier.

The Birinchi Mai district court in Bishkek told RFE/RL on February 9 that it ruled eight days earlier to place rights defender Anvar Sartaev in pretrial detention at least until April 1 on charges of calling for mass unrest, violent acts against citizens, and disobeying the orders of authorities. The Interior Ministry has not commented on the issue. Sartaev is known for his activities monitoring the rights of current and former military personnel. He unsuccessfully tried to get elected to the post of the country's ombudsman in 2015 and took part in parliamentary elections in 2017.
