BISHKEK -- The U.S. ambassador to Bishkek, Pamela Spratlen, says her country is proud of its partnership with Kyrgyzstan.
In an interview with RFE/RL in the Kyrgyz capital on May 14, Spratlen said the U.S. government has been assisting Bishkek in strengthening Kyrgyzstan's democratic institutions.
Spratlen said the U.S. transit center at the Manas airport near Bishkek is an example of good mutual cooperation.
She called the transit center "a very important logistical facility" that contributes to regional stability.
NATO has been using the facility to send noncombat supplies to its troops in Afghanistan.
According to Spratlen, talks on the facility's future after NATO troops' 2014 withdrawal from Afghanistan are continuing.
Spratlen also said lack of evidence led to U.S. prosecutors’ recent decision to drop financial fraud charges against the former president’s son, Maksim Bakiev.
