Uzbek-Language Newspaper Editor Under House Arrest

"Ush sadosi" editor in chief Muhammadsoli Ismoilov

OSH, Kyrgyzstan -- The editor in chief of the Uzbek language "Ush sadosi" (Voice of Osh) newspaper in southern Kyrgyzstan has been placed under house arrest in connection with the case of a missing person.

Muhammadsoli Ismoilov told RFE/RL on April 3 that the Osh city court ordered that he remain confined to his house for up to two months.

Ismoilov and two residents of the town of Shark in the Osh province were detained on March 31.

They were accused of involvement in the possible death of a man who disappeared almost three years ago during ethnic clashes between local Uzbeks and Kyrgyz.

The two suspects detained with Ismoilov remain in police custody.

More than 400 people were killed during an outbreak of violence in the Osh and Jalal-Abad regions in mid-June 2010.
