Libyans are marking the one-year anniversary of the start of the uprising that toppled the rule of Muammar Qaddafi after 42 years in power.
Backed by NATO air power, anti-Qaddafi rebels battled the dictator’s forces, eventually forcing him from Tripoli in a conflict in which thousands of people were killed or injured.
In October, rebel forces captured Qaddafi. He was killed in their custody.
In a statement released on February 17, the White House said Libya's new authorities "now have a responsibility" to protect the freedoms won in the uprising.
In report released this week, the human rights watchdog Amnesty International says some of the armed groups who helped topple Qaddafi are now responsible for ongoing human rights abuses, including jailing and torturing suspected Qaddafi loyalists and forcing minority groups from their homes.
The report said the National Transitional Council that now governs the North African country has done nothing to rein in the violence of militia groups.
