Libya's NTC Elects Interim Premier

Interim Libyan leader Mustafa Abdel Jalil (center) stepped down after the country was declared "liberated" by his National Transitional Council on October 23.

Libya's National Transitional Council has elected Abdel-Rahim el-Keeb, as the new head of a transitional government.

El-Keeb, an electronics engineer, garnered the most votes out of a field of eight candidates.

The NTC declared the country's "liberation" three days after the October 20 capture and killing of longtime dictator Muammar Qaddafi.

The NTC is to hand over power to an elected assembly within eight months and a constitution is to be drawn up.
