Forces of Libya's interim rulers are reported to have begun advancing into Sirte, one of the last remaining bastions of supporters of ousted ruler Muammar Qaddafi.
The forces of the National Transitional Council (NTC) were reported on October 3 to have captured a southern district of Sirte, which is known Qaddafi's hometown.
Reports say that after weeks of fighting around Sirte, there are concerns about the humanitarian situation faced by residents trapped by the fighting or who have declined to flee.
Qaddafi, who was ousted from the capital, Tripoli, in August, remains at large, and his supporters continue to hold Sirte and the town of Bani Walid.
In another development, the National Transitional Council on October 3 named a new cabinet.
Reports, however, say that the new lineup does not contain many changes from the previous list.
The interim rulers say they intend to keep their posts until Libya is secured and all towns are liberated from Qaddafi supporters, after which a new transitional government will be formed before elections.
