Iraqi Prime Minister Says He Won't Seek Third Term In Office

Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki

Iraqi state television quoted Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki on February 5 as saying he won't run for a third time when his current term is up in 2014.

The announcement came a day after his decision to return half his annual pay to the government treasury, saying it would help ease disparities between rich and poor.

Clerics across the country said during Friday sermons that Iraqi leaders must do more to fight corruption and promote social justice to avert Tunisia- or Egypt-style uprisings.

Commenting on the antigovernment protests in Egypt, the French news agency AFP quoted Maliki as saying, "I wish the Egyptian people to achieve democracy."
