Syrian activists say an alliance of Kurdish and Arab fighters has taken "almost complete control" of Manbij, a strategically important city held by the Islamic State (IS) group.
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on August 6 that the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) are “combing the city in search of the last remaining jihadists."
A spokesman of the SDF-allied Manbij military council, Sharfan Darwish, said battles were continuing but that around 90 percent of Manbij had been cleared of IS militants.
The SDF, a coalition of U.S.-backed fighters including the Kurdish YPG militia, launched an offensive to retake Manbij two months ago.
The city, located at an intersection of roads south of the Turkish border, has been under IS control for more than two years.
