Ex-Wife Says Nelson Mandela 'Better'

Winnie Madikizela-Mandela. Nelson Mandela's ex-wife, speaks to the media outside their first family home in Soweto on June 28.

The former wife of Nelson Mandela says the condition of the ailing 94-year-old former South African president has improved in the past few days.

Winnie Madikizela-Mandela said on June 28 that despite the improvement, Mandela "clinically is still unwell."

Mandela was rushed to hospital nearly three weeks ago for a recurring lung infection.

On June 27, officials described his condition as "critical but stable."

U.S. President Barack Obama, en route to South Africa on June 28, said he did not want to be "obtrusive" and that he did not need a "photo op" with the ailing statesman.

Obama has called Mandela, who was jailed for 27 years for his struggle against apartheid before becoming South Africa's first black president, a "personal hero."
