South African officials said today that former president and anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela has been discharged from hospital.
Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe said Mandela is "well" and "in good spirits."
The country's surgeon-general, V.J. Ramlakan, told reporters Mandela responded well to treatment for an acute respiratory infection and was discharged to receive home-based care.
"He recently developed an acute respiratory infection for which he received treatment and has responded very well. He is stable but will be monitored closely," Ramlakan said.
Mandela, 92, was admitted to hospital on January 26. The country's first elected black president spent 27 years in jail, where he suffered from tuberculosis, among other ailments.
