Medvedev Pardons Man Jailed For Hitting Policeman At Rally

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on April 23 pardoned a man convicted of attacking a police officer during an unsanctioned opposition rally in Moscow in December 2009.

The 56-year-old Sergei Mokhnatkin, who was sentenced to 30 months in a labor camp, denies the charge.

Mokhnatkin maintains he was walking past the opposition protest when he struck a policeman who -- according to Mokhnatkin -- was assaulting an elderly woman.

Mokhnatkin's arrest prompted condemnations by human rights and opposition activists, who staged protests over his jailing.

He was on a list of 32 persons allegedly prosecuted for their political stance that was submitted to Medvedev by opposition leaders in February.
