Afghan officials say Taliban militants have staged a large-scale attack on a remote police checkpoint in western Farah Province, injuring at least 11 police officers.

Farah police officials said more than 100 insurgents were involved in the attack, which targeted the Bala Boluk outpost early on May 9.

Militants captured a tank, a pickup truck, and some arms and ammunition.

Some 25 police officers and army troops were forced to briefly abandon the checkpoint and call for reinforcements from the provincial capital to repulse the attack.

Officials say at least five militants were killed and nearly 20 others injured in the exchange of fire with police.

The figures cannot be independently confirmed.
