More Than 430 Dead As Tropical Storm Slams Philippines

The Red Cross says the mounting death toll from floods and landslides caused by a tropical storm is now more than 430 people.

Most of the casualties were in two coastal cities -- Cagayan de Oro, a major port on Mindanao island, and Iligan, a nearby southern port.

Many people are still missing. The storm hit the southern region of Mindanao on December 16, delivering heavy rains that caused rivers to overflow their banks.

Military spokesman Colonel Leopoldo Galon earlier said an army division of about 10,000 soldiers has been deployed to carry out rescue operations and search for survivors.
