Russia's Helsinki Group is calling on Russians to donate to its human rights projects in the wake of a new law requiring Western-backed nongovernmental organizations to register as foreign agents.
A statement on group's website calls on "all individuals and legal entities to take part in raising funds for the continuation of MHG operations."
Leading NGOs, including the Moscow Helsinki Group, Golos, Memorial, Civil Assistance, and For Human Rights, have declared their boycott of the new law, which requires them to register as foreign agents if they receive foreign grants.
Lyudmila Alekseyeva, the 85-year-old head of the Moscow Helsinki Group, told Interfax that her organization will never call itself a foreign agent but it may be forced to give up foreign grants in order to comply with the new regulations.
