Moscow Subway Fire Forces Evacuation

People wait for the reopening of the Komsomolskaya subway station on the red line in Moscow on June 5.

A fire on the Sokolnicheskaya line of Moscow's subway has forced the evacuation of thousands of commuters and caused the temporary closure of the line.

Authorities say the fire produced a large amount of smoke and reports say at least 45 people were injured

Russia's Emergency Situations Ministry said that the fire started on June 5 after a power cable appeared to have short-circuited in the tunnel between the Okhotny Ryad and Lenin Library stations.

The ministry said the blaze was extinguished later in the morning.
