Moscow Rejects Request To Hold 'Strategy 31' Gathering

Moscow city authorities have rejected a request by an opposition group to hold a demonstration on August 31 on the Russian capital's Triumph Square.

The protesters are seeking to hold another rally in the Strategy 31 campaign in support of freedom of assembly, which is guaranteed by Article 31 of the Russian Constitution.

The gatherings have been held since 2009 on the last day of the months of the year that have 31 days.

The campaign's founder, Eduard Limonov, a leader of the unregistered Other Russia opposition movement, said supporters intend to gather on the square despite the authorities' refusal to approve the rally.

Limonov also called on Moscow city authorities to turn Triumph Square into a place similar to Speakers' Corner in London's Hyde Park, where people would be free to express their viewpoints.
